API_2H_Grade_50_offshore_Steel_Plates_sheets20115281624270This grade of steel plate was originally designed for the use in production for offshore fixed and floating production platforms where strength and material integrity is required in several dimensions. It is regulated by the American Petroleum Institute and in some cases certified by ABS (American Bureau of Shipbuilding). Because of its stringent restrictions API has also been adapted in many other applications such as Base rings / Cylinders for Crane production, Piling for severe application on Bridge Construction and for “Fracture Critical” applications in areas where resistance to vibration and torque are necessary.

It is an intermediate-strength, normalized, structural-steel plate used in the welded construction of offshore structures in critical portions. Steel used in these applications must exhibit higher impact toughness and resistance to fatigue loading.

This Carbon Manganese steel plate is used in welded construction of offshore structures, in selected critical portions which must resist impact, plastic fatigue loading and lamellar tearing. The steel plate is intended for fabrication primarily by cold forming and welding as per API Specification 2B. The primary use is in tubular joints, stiffened plate construction and other intersections where portions of the plates will be subjected to tension in the thickness direction (Z direction).

API 2H Grade50 exhibits good impact toughness and resistance to plastic fatigue loading and lamellar tearing thus it is intended primarily for the use in critical and crucial areas or sections of offshore structure projects such as tubular joints, stiffened plate construction and other intersections where portions of the steel plates will be subjected to tension in the through-thickness (Z) direction. API 2H Grade50 is also suitable as a piling material for bridge construction due to its fracture, vibration and torque resistance. API 2H Grade 50 is therefore not only an effective material for floating and rigid offshore platform construction, it also has other uses as a high yield and highly specified structural grade material.

Tolerances

Thickness, width, and length tolerances for API 2H Grade 50 steel plate are in accordance with the requirements of ASTM A6. The flatness tolerance for as-supplied product is ½ ASTM A6.

Delivery Condition

API 2H Grade 50 is supplied in the normalized condition.

Fabrication and Other Recommendations

Weldability: Welding of API 2H Grade 50 shall be performed in accordance with the applicable welding code. In the absence of a specified welding code, the following suggested minimum preheat and I recommend inter pass temperatures and welding consumables are provided. Special welding consumables and welding procedures may be required to match the base metal toughness. Low hydrogen practices are strongly recommended, including the removal of surface moisture.

API-2H

Heat-treated carbon-manganese steel plate, primarily used for offshore platform tubular joints, stiffened plate construction, and welded construction of offshore structures. Produced in normalized condition in grades 42 and 50 (up to 4”). Weldability is critical and plates are supplied under this spec with a max carbon equivalence (CE) of 0.43-0.45 depending on thickness. Tensile range is 62-82 KSI for grade 42 and 70-90 KSI for grade 50. Yield minimums are 42 KSI and 50 KSI for the corresponding grade. Plates are commonly ordered with Charpy Impacts at -40° F.

Whilst originally designed as a structural steel for use in the welded construction of offshore platforms, the material is also used in other applications due to the tight controls placed on the chemical composition of the steel at the mill stage.
